Web Bits

I have been looking at the internets. I'm sure that is a surprise to you. I have come across what I like to refer to as 'good stuff'.

I believe I may have mentioned it before but XKCD is a very good webcomic for the geeky at heart. In particular this one, which was posted recently. Add it to your RSS feeds!

And here's a little gem which genuinely got me quite choked up. Tissues at the ready.

Finally (and I know it's been a long time coming, but working in London now I rarely get the chance to even think about it), here's another Marmaduke. Hooray!

IE 'Click to Activate'

Posted on 20/11/2007 at 10:26:01 by MakTheYak

You thought this was a comic blog? You maybe thought this was a personaly blog? Well you were right but I'm a Web Developer and so it's also a tech blog. Feel free to switch off now if this isn't interesting to you.

So if you're an IE user (OK I've probably lost all my audience now as I just told the non-techies to switch off and now I'm referring to IE users) you may have seen the 'Click to Activate' overlay on some flash movies. This is because Microsoft were sued by Eolas who had some sort of patent for that kind of thing. The upshot is that developers had to find workarounds to not show that overlay. Any by golly they did. Developers are clever sorts.

But now on the IE blog they are celebrating the fact that they are now getting rid of this feature. They're celebrating when it makes absolutely no frickin' difference.

The reason it makes no difference is that by the time they roll out the update that gets rid of the message, it will have been two years since it came in. Two years is a long time in this industry and it's long enough to make sure a lot of people have browsers that display that functionality. While some will apply the update due in April immidiately, many will not and it'll probably be a good few years until there are few enough people using that technology so that we don't have to bother employing the workarounds any more.

Long and the short of it is that Microsoft should have paid up right at the start and we would never have got in this mess in the first place. Thanks Microsoft!

I hope you like this comic...

Because I've been working over an hour to get it online. This is due to the server going rather slow. No idea why but if you're experiencing it too, I'm very sorry. I've emailed support to try and find out why it's happening...

*Sigh* aren't weekends all fun and games?

Super Mario

...Galaxy, to be precise. It's awesome. There's no way to describe it so that you could imagine what it's like to play. Sure it's a Mario platformer but somehow they took the genre and bent it so far out of shape that it feels completely fresh. And it's utterly charming without being overly saccharine. The score is excellent and has filled me with a sense of elation on more than one occasion.

Suffice to say there's a reason that it's reportedly the highest rated game in history. I highly recommend you invest!

And you know what? I've got another Marmaduke for you. It's kind of seasonal and so I'm only a month and a bit early here. If you don't want to consider Christmas at this time of year, steer clear of this one!

It's back (and bigger than a bread box)

That's right, another successful server move. I'm getting not too bad at these, I've got to say. We're back to being hosted over in Yankland (an affection term, you understand) which is very cost effective and this particular host (Hostgator) has been very good so far, having received several tech support requests from me and managing to reply extremely quickly to and resolve all of them. That's a high accolade indeed.

Unfortunately this means, however, that until I have the time to either rewrite the site or go through the current one and make it PHP5 compliant that the times will be a bit off. That is to say they currently appear to be 6 hours behind. I'll fix it pretty soon. At least it works!

And so without further ado, here's the next Marmaduke! There aren't many of these left (9 after this to be precise) so enjoy them while you can. I do have plans for when they're all up which I may have mentioned before but I'm not going to right now as it's time I was in bed...
