Progress!
Posted on 06/04/2005 at 18:37:15 by MakTheYakI'm making progress in my quest to get ready for the Bristol Comic Expo in May! I have made some nifty little tabletop standees of Polly and the Cap'n as you can see in this rather fine digital image following:
I also have badges! There are 4 varieties - 2 of the Cap'n in different poses, 1 Polly and 1 Pete. These were kindly made for my by my friend Chris who Roz and I joined along with his wife Joy to provide moral support and to generally get in the way around his stall at Memorabilia.
All in all it was a fun weekend - I spent most of Saturday wandering around the show and looking at all the vendors' wares, of which there are many. There was everything from Trading Cards to Comic books to DVDs to Toys and Action Figures... I ended up spending a little too much money to tell the truth seeing a few "must buys". I got issue 1 and 2 of the PvP Collections giving me issues 1-12 to read through. Also while browsing through the paperbacks I came across a little book called Herobear and the Kid. It's quite possible that many of you have already heard of this little gem since it's been around for over 5 years now, but it's a first for me apart from noticing something briefly in Scott Kurtz's blog a little while back. I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying reading this thing, the art is beatiful, the story is great... if you see it, buy it! You won't regret it.
I also picked up the region 1 versions of Miyazaki's Nausicaa and Porco Rosso, and also The Cat Returns, another Studio Ghibli (link in Japanese) movie. They have recently been released with an English dub in America but there's no published release date in the UK so I figured I'd better get them there and then at a good price! Better not disturb me, I'll be too busy watching!
Alrighty, I'll keep you up to date with the comicon news so check back regularly mkay?
UK Web and Mini Comix Thing Update
Posted on 20/03/2005 at 00:40:39 by MakTheYakOK so I went along to the UK Web and Mini Comix Thing today and it was a cool experience. I saw a bunch of cool artists showing off their stuff and trying to make a few quid at the same time by selling merch with their artwork on. Which is precisely what I am planning on doing in May at Bristol! I still got a few good ideas going though, and I'm really looking forward to it now. It's gonna be so cool :D
Little Gamers were there as well as the gang from Housd and Beaver and Steve. The star of the show had to be Jonti Picking, better known as Weebl from Weebl and Bob and of course Weebl's Stuff. Here's the photo I snapped after he signed my Weebl and Bob DVD... he's the one on the left!
It was a great blast to see everyone and I'd recommed it to anyone with a passing interest in comics. And what with the Comic Expo in May being even bigger and better with even famouser people, I hope EVERYONE can come along!
Oh yeah... I think Jonti looks a little bit demeted there cos I had to touch up the serious red eye I got and I think it gave him different coloured irises for some reason! Baffling!
Concerts and Wallpaper!
Posted on 15/03/2005 at 09:20:51 by MakTheYakOK folks long time no update. Shocking seeing as nearly a week ago I went to a really great concert - something which I should be sounding off about! Well the fact of it is that I wanted to get some pictures up of it in the gallery but seeing as how the gallery isn't all that great I kind of lost the will and inclination. In short I think I'm gonna have to make my own gallery 'module' thingy. At least it'll do what I want it to do!
So the concert in question? Roz and I went to see Natasha Bedingfield. She has a set of great tracks on her debut album and she played them all and then a few more! She even covered Maroon 5's 'This Love' which was an unexpected treat. She sounds great live, has a great voice and I think her songs sound just as good live as they do on the album... if not better!
The lighting kind of messed with the camera but that's not a bad shot. It was a great show and if you get the chance to see her do it! If you haven't heard her music, then check out her website as it has some clips on.
Next up - I have a new wallpaper for you lot!
Hope you like it! I'll be selling a few items with this design on at the Bristol Comic Expo so don't forget to come along to that and see me there (along with a bunch of other cool comiccy people!
Shows you must watch (and the ones you mustn't)
Posted on 19/02/2005 at 14:26:59 by MakTheYakI don't know if I've mentioned it before but I am quite enamoured with the Japanese animé show Full Metal Alchemist. It's got it all... action, fantasy, adventure, drama, comedy and a wee bit of romance thrown in on the side. Obviously it's not airing in the UK, although I believe you Americans can watch a dubbed version on the Adult Swim bit of the Cartoon Network. I don't know about the quality of the dub but it's a great show so watch it if you can. If you can't catch it on TV look for a BitTorrent of it, or you can buy good quality bootlegs of it on ebay ;)
Talking of BitTorrent, one show which I watch regularly through that channel is Lost. It's a show about a group of people who crash land on an island after their plane goes down. They must survive as best they can with the knowledge that they may never actually get picked up. And then there's all the weird things that keep going on on the island... it's quite possible that they are not alone! You can get Lost through BTefNet.net, which has quite a few popular shows but not all of them. Sadly it's one of the few torrent sites still up after the evil RIAA had its way with most of them (or they closed themselves down before they got there out of pure fear).
Finally - what NOT to watch. This is a preview video for a concept being developed by Warner Bros. It is (of course) by no means a new concept although they seem to be trying to make out that it is. What they are actually doing is bastardising something that is loved and cherished by several generations and trying to turn it into something that it was never meant to be. I really honestly hope I never accidentally catch this show because it will just insult me somewhat. Where's my Looney Tunes complete archive collection on DVD? Someone needs to give ol' WB a kick in the right direction.
Red Nose Day 2005
Posted on 05/02/2005 at 21:40:34 by MakTheYakJust a little reminder about Red Nose Day! It's all starting to happen - you can get your noses and all the other expected merchandise from Sainsburys and various other retail outlets.
For those not in the UK, Red Nose day is a charity fund raising event put on every 2 years or so led by comedian couple Dawn French and Lenny Henry and it's a really big deal with practically the whole country participating.
So what are you waiting for? Get out and start spending your money on RND branded items! It's all for a good cause!

Oh look! Googling for the webpage told me that there's an Australian Red Nose Day, although it's for a completely different cause.
